Ideas for Cleaning Out Your Closet

Written by Friday, 26 December 2014 17:52

3081 101413 gs3081Many of us are secret hoarders. We don't mean to be...somewhere, deep down, we REALLY think we are going to USE this stuff again one day. In the meantime, closet spaces can often become a nightmare. If you have stuff falling on your head when you open your closet doors, it is time to get things under control.

Why Donate?

If you haven't used or worn something in a year, a good rule of thumb is to pass it on. Someone else can use your items. It is the ultimate form of recycling. Yes, you could take photos and try to sell the items online. Yes, you could wash, iron and label everything to finally take it down to that consignment store. Or, you could simply do a good deed and give it away for free. Clearing your space is a vital component to clearing your mind.

Positive Feng Shui

The ancient practice of Feng Shui denotes having certain things placed in a specific way. It is said that clutter symbolizes the state of a person's mind. Some believe that living in a jumbled mess contributes to anxiety and disorganization. Adopting a clutter free environment throughout your home, in your closets, your junk drawers, and your vehicle can leave you feeling empowered and invigorated! The Maid of North York are experts that can help you with cleaning and getting rid of clutter in your space.

Seasonal Storage

Investing in some great Rubbermaid style bins with lids that can stack on each other is money well spent. Be sure to label things accordingly. For example:

  • Christmas lights
  • Christmas decorations
  • Ice skates/roller blades
  • Halloween decorations
  • Craft supplies
  • Donation clothes and shoes

If you have an ongoing donation bin, it is easy to drop items off or have them ready when collection services come through the neighborhood. Many associations such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the Diabetes Foundation will call you every time they are coming through your area, typically every month to 6 weeks. Don't forget to look through your kitchen cupboards and your book collection to see if you can lighten your load even further.

Housekeeping Storage Tips for Seasonal Clothing

Written by Friday, 19 December 2014 17:50

4064 101413 gs4064When one season transits into another, you will certainly want to put away some clothes. This usually happens when winter is over and spring is in. At times, it might prove tricky to store seasonal clothes for a long time. However, they must be properly stored so they can be used the next season. Here is a breakdown of several tips to help you store seasonal clothes safely and in a conducive environment:

Keep Clean

Before you even think of storage, all clothes must be cleaned. Note that the storage will be long term and if stains are left on the clothes, they might set in for good. Cleaning is hygienic and should be your first priority. You should also iron the clothes if possible, in order to make the task of packaging easier.

Use New Plastic Containers

In most cases, the use of plastic containers in storing seasonal clothes is not recommended. However, if you must use such containers, make sure you get new ones. Old plastic containers might have created surfaces for larvae and insects hence threatening the safety of your clothes. On the other hand, new plastic bags are basically clean usually do not attract insects and other organisms.

Label All Storage Containers

The use of labels in marking storage containers is always a great idea. Note that clothes have to be categorized with regard to their types. For instance, jackets and sweaters should be stored apart from shoes and leg-warmers. To ensure an easy task when retrieving your clothes, it is advised that you label all containers by contents.

Decide On Whether or Not to Vacuum the Containers

It might interest you to know that the environment in which you store your clothes matters a lot. Clothes made of delicate fiber and silk require adequate air circulation. This is to ensure that both the structure of fiber and silk remain intact during the span of storage. In such a case, you might not require vacuuming your storage containers. On the other hand, some clothes, like those made of cotton, are not affected by inadequate air circulation hence should not necessarily be stored in a vacuum.

After you are done with what your plans for the day, it’s good to get enough sleep, since sleep is the number one stress reliever.

You do not need to worry at all because with the right tips, you can maintain a clean and organized chest of drawers. Read on and follow the tips below.

Take Everything Off

Before you can truly organize your dresser, it is best to clean every section it has. Take every item off your dresser. Do not forget to include all the other sections of the dresser.

Organize Everything

The next thing you should do is to organize your clothes according to size or categories.  Create piles for similar clothing items including tank tops, shirts and pants, underwear, bras and socks. These should all be placed in one particular area.

Make Use of Boxes

For a more organized dresser, purchase boxes of different sizes. Place them inside the upper drawer. In each box, you can store and organize your jewelry accessories, hankies, scarves, headbands and other items.

What Homeowners Need To Know - Additional Tips

For your convenience, it is best to place your out-of-season clothing items in the bottom drawers since you will not be wearing them. On the other hand, the clothes you usually wear should be in the upper drawers. Another important thing you need to remember is to make a conscious effort whenever you need to return any items back into the drawers. By the time you need to use them again, you can avoid confusion. Simple Steps for Cleaning Your Leather Jackets

Written by Friday, 14 November 2014 00:00

character 1110095-012814-intYou should never try to clean your leather jackets the way you clean jackets made from other materials. This is because leather jackets can easily be damaged if you do not clean them using the right methods. Whether you own a vintage or a modern design leather jacket, following the right cleaning tips will help a lot to keep your jacket clean at all times. However, leather jackets should be cleaned only when there is need. In fact, it is recommended that you should clean your leather jackets only once a year.

Cleaning Steps

Before you begin, still make sure that you follow any manufacturer’s care instructions. To clean your leather jacket, you will need a bucket or bowl, sponges, a gentle hand soap product, soft cloth and leather conditioner (another option is vegetable oil). Now on to cleaning….

  • Pour 1/3 cup of gentle hand soap and 2/3 cup of water into your bucket or bowl and mix.
  • Lightly moisten the sponge with the soapy water, but make sure to that it isn’t too wet.
  • Gently wipe the jacket, but DO NOT scrub any part of it, as this could damage it.
  • Rinse the sponge in clean plain water and wipe the jacket to remove the soap residue.
  • Wipe the jacket again, this time using a soft dry cloth to remove excess moisture.
  • Hang the jacket so that it can dry

Once the jacket is dry, lightly apply leather conditioner (or vegetable oil), making sure that you do not apply too much, as it will not soak all the way in, causing dirt and grime to stick to the surface of the jacket.

With these simple steps, the outside of your jacket will be clean. To clean the liner, hang the jacket and gently vacuum it’s interior. If there is odor that you want to remove, mix baking soda with water and use a sponge dipped in the mixture to wipe the interior after vacuuming. Hang the jacket in an open area to dry.And while you are taking care of all your nice personal items, let The Maids of North York, in Ontario assist you with all your house cleaning needs.

How to Clean Your Oven

Written by Friday, 07 November 2014 00:00

gsappp-img-7490-120213Maintaining your oven not only helps to extend its life, but it also helps to make it more efficient. Although looking after the oven is definitely not a fun task, it is one of those things that you have to do whether you like it or not. In fact, you should make it a habit to keep your oven working at its best at all the time.

Cleaning Without Harsh Chemicals

To loosen stuck-on grime without the use of harsh chemicals, pour 2-3 cups of water into an oven-safe bowl or casserole dish and heat it on 450 for about 20 minutes. This will produce steam to loosen grime build-up so that you can easily remove it. Wipe out the oven using a soft cloth. You can also add some lemon juice to the water mix before heating to deodorize your oven. The racks should be cleansed in the dish washer and the glass doors wiped clean using a nylon cleaning pad.

Cleaning Using Oven Cleaner

If your oven is heavily soiled, you may need to use an oven cleaner product. Remember to use gloves to protect your skin from the oven cleaner chemicals. You may also want to use a mask when initially spraying the cleaner. Also, make sure the oven is off and completely cool before application.
